Over the last ten financial years (prior to 2022), the total volume of exported wine has been between 619 million litres and 849 million litres per annum, with a total value of between A$1.79 billion and A$2.91 billion.

Total wine volume has declined by an average of 1.6% per year over the past 10 years, while value has increased by an average of 0.4% per year. The five-year average growth rates are lower than the 10-year rates, largely influenced by the declines in 2021 and 2022.

Wine Australia's latest report shows Australian wine exports in the year to March 31, 2023, totalled $1.90 billion, with total exports down by 1 per cent. This compares to an 18% reduction from the 10-year average of A $2.30 billion.

Peter Bailey, marketing manager at wine Australia, said the main reason for the year-on-year decline in total exports was lower exports to the UK. "This is due to the increase in shipments over the past two years due to pre-Brexit demand and changing consumer preferences caused by the COVID-19 outbreak." The sharp decline in total UK imports was offset by sales growth in the US and Canada, particularly in bulk wines." Australia's diversification into emerging markets is starting to take off, with strong growth in major emerging markets such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The report illustrates the current plight of Australian wine around the world. Peter Bailey Said: " In the traditional Australian wine market, the lower price segment declines most, while demand for premium wines is still growing because consumers buy wine less frequently but choose to spend more on each wine they buy. The export situation of Australian wine is very serious.”

For the year to March 2023, wine exports declined across all Australian price segments (FOB prices below A $10 / L). The biggest drop was between A $2.50 and A $4.99 per liter, mainly for bottled wine exported to the US, UK and New Zealand. Exports per liter FOB of more than A $10 remained stable throughout the year.

In the year to the end of March 2023, Australian wines were sold to 118 countries and regions, compared with 112 in the same period in 2022. The strongest growth in Australian wine exports was in Southeast Asia, up 9% to A $301 m. This growth was offset by a 5% drop in exports to North America to A $557 million, while exports to Europe fell 17% to A $568 million. The European markets are facing severe tests due to the region's economic challenges and war conflicts. Exports in Northeast Asia were also falling, falling 5 per cent to A $318 m.
