Australian exports to the UK fell by 20% at the end of March, 2023, according to the Australian Wine Association (WA). Exports to the US fell 8% year on year. Overall exports were down by 7%.

To Australia's dismay, the International Grape and Wine Organization (OIV) said last week that global wine exports for 2022 were 37.6 billion euros ($41.22 billion), up an average of 15% from 2021.

Recently Australia has finally got something to look forward to, with the barley review beginning and promising to accelerate exports. With a breakthrough in sight, Australia's trade minister said he hoped wine would be the next target.

After all, unlike barley, Australian wine, even with a new free trade agreement with India, Australian wine will not find an alternative market so easily.

"Barley growers have found it relatively easy to put their products in an alternative market, but the size and price premium offered by the Chinese market is making it impossible for wine to do this," said director of the Australian-China Relations Institute (ACRI) at the University of Technology Sydney, which is the Australian scholar.

In terms of time, it is already in the season of Australian grape picking, the barley review needs a few months, and then let alone other commodities. Australia is expected to resume wine exports to China within this year, but the amount should not be too large.
